CBD and anandamide
Since its discovery in the early 1990s, anandamide has been dubbed the “happiness molecule”. However, what are the effects of this endocannabinoid and neurotransmitter? What is the relationship between CBD and anandamide? How can we use them to our advantage?
Next, we will see what role anandamide plays in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). We will also talk about the differences and similarities with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component present in cannabis.
But more importantly, we will discover how CBD products can be used to increase anandamide, and alleviate a variety of conditions. We’ll even tell you how physical activity aids in the production of the neurotransmitter anandamide.

What is anandamide and what are its effects?
Anandamide, like endorphins, dopamine and serotonin, is a neurotransmitter. It is a powerful neurotransmitter with antidepressant effects, which is why it is known to generate “happy” emotions.
It is also recognized as a natural and reliable mood enhancer. The neurotransmitter anandamide is found in the cocoa plant, which is why we often feel better after eating chocolate.
Anandamide may also help decrease sensitivity to pain and increase appetite. Because cannabinoid receptors, particularly CB2 receptors, are found on white blood cells, the endocannabinoid appears to affect the immune system response.
Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), another endocannabinoid and neurotransmitter, are believed to be responsible for regulating the immune system to prevent hyperactivity and excessive inflammation, according to existing research.
Endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors and the enzymes that degrade them, are part of the endocannabinoid system, which as we know, is a larger network in the body. CBD and anandamide, as well as other cannabinoids, can chemically modify this system, which explains their therapeutic effects.
Anandamide benefits
Anandamide is a neurotransmitter that regulates pain, mobility and satiety or fullness of meals. For these reasons many want to buy anandamide, as it could be extremely beneficial in our day to day lives, plagued by conditions such as low back pain, obesity and mobility difficulties.
Mind and body in harmony
Endocannabinoid substances and their receptors work together to keep our mind and body in harmony. This can take several forms, each of which explains the roles they play as outlined above.
For example, when the body and mind are in sync, appetite control allows us to maintain adequate levels of fuel for crucial movement and muscle development.
All of the above without ‘overloading’ and storing that extra fuel as adipose tissue or fat. This is important as adipose tissue causes unnecessary wear and tear on our bodies, which can lead to a variety of serious ailments.
In addition, when adequate levels of anandamide are present in our bodies, our minds can synchronize with our bodies and promote motivation for effortless activity and the rejection of lethargy.
When this happens, it activates our muscles and respiratory system in a way that has been shown to provide mental health benefits, including an increased sense of well-being and a decrease in depression.
The encouragement you need
Food to keep you going, easy encouragement to keep you moving and pain to keep you going (no more than necessary). When there are sufficient amounts of anandamide, this is how these three systems are kept in equilibrium.
So, perhaps referring to anandamide as the “happiness molecule” is a bit simplistic. Anandamide will not give us life-changing feelings of happiness instantly, but it will make the things that have proven to give us happiness, fit almost perfectly.
All this will give us the necessary impulse to synchronize and optimize our mind and body, and get our best version.
CBD and anandamide: differences and similarities with THC
Raphael Mechoulam, the same Israeli researcher who isolated the psychoactive chemical THC as well as CBD in the 1960s, discovered anandamide as an endogenous analogue of THC. At that time it was determined that opioid alkaloids such as morphine are to the opioid system what anandamide is to THC and the endocannabinoid system.
Anandamide and THC are both CB1 receptor agonists. THC, on the other hand, is much more potent than anandamide and therefore takes longer to break down. The appetite suppressant effects of THC can be much more severe. The user may experience intense cravings and cottony mouth as a side effect.
On the other hand, THC’s mood enhancement is similar to euphoria. However, the strong psychoactive effects of the cannabinoid can amplify mood drops. As a result, it can generate emotions of worry and paranoia in unexpected or upsetting situations.
THC enhances the therapeutic effects of anandamide in a medical setting. Anandamide, for example, is an endogenous analgesic. This explains why many people use medical marijuana to treat chronic pain. In addition, THC can also compensate for endocannabinoid deficiency, which may be the underlying and so far unknown cause of certain disorders.
There is now a body of research linking fibromyalgia, migraines and irritable bowel syndrome to the same condition. This is now known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD).
How to enhance the effects of anandamide with CBD?
Talking about the anandamide CBD ratio, the latter can help those who are unable to increase anandamide levels on their own. Because anandamide inhibits fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), it remains active in the ECS for longer, thereby improving its efficacy.
Due to a deficiency of anandamide, a person who experiences depressive episodes may have a depressed mood. This deficiency can be treated by taking CBD, preferably in the form of liquid or oil for vaping, as a faster effect can be obtained.
In addition, increased levels of anandamide have been linked to relief of symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, more research is still needed in this area, but CBD could certainly be a useful treatment for this disease.
Positive effects of CBD
CBD products can help people with lack of appetite by increasing levels of anandamide, which is known to increase appetite. Anandamide binds to the CB1 receptor, which regulates appetite. Because loss of appetite is a common symptom of depression, this benefit may be beneficial.
CBD is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which are achieved by stimulating important endocannabinoid compounds such as anandamide and 2-AG. Both are CB2 receptor agonists, which influence white blood cells to regulate inflammation.
Inflammation affects our body in a variety of ways, which can be treated with CBD products. Inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease, originate inside the body and require treatment by ingestion or inhalation.
A topical medication, on the other hand, will provide more considerable relief for skin inflammation, such as acne, which is caused by irritation and overactive sebaceous glands.
Following the same logic, an ailment located close to the skin is best treated with a CBD pain cream. The mechanism by which CBD reduces pain sensitivity is still unknown, however, the role of anandamide as a TRPV-1 receptor agonist could be crucial in this.
This protein, also known as vanilloid receptor 1, regulates both heat and pain perception.
Can exercise increase anandamide?
Scientists make mistakes from time to time, and this seems to be the case with our understanding of the chemical effects that cause what is known as “runner’s high”. This antidepressant and euphoric effect is well known among regular exercisers, as it occurs after a period of intense training.
The traditional theory was that endorphins, which are naturally generated opiates, were responsible for the “euphoria”. However, new European research reveals that anandamide is responsible for most of this effect. This is because endorphins cannot cross the blood-brain barrier and connect to receptors that could trigger a mood change.
Anandamide, on the other hand, can and does bind to CB1 receptors found in the central nervous system. As a result, the known antidepressant effects of exercise, especially running, are mediated by the endocannabinoid system and the cannabinoids contained in cannabis.
While cannabis plays an important role in promoting endocannabinoid activity in the body, certain foods and lifestyle choices can also enhance its effects.
