Can the immune system be regulated with CBD?
To understand the relationship between CBD and our immune system it is important to understand the function of the endocannabinoid system. This system is part of our central nervous system, and is responsible for keeping our body running smoothly. Endocannabinoid synthesis and the endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 help the endocannabinoid system to maintain homeostasis.
Binding is the process through which endocannabinoids and receptors communicate and work together to govern our immune system. However, when our bodies create endocannabinoids, sometimes they don’t work effectively, as in the case of autoimmune diseases.
As a result, our bodies will accept cannabinoids (derived from marijuana) in place of the defective endocannabinoids. Both CB1 and CB2 receptors are affected by THC and CBD. These receptors are crucial because our primary neurotransmitters are released through them.
On the one hand, CB1 receptors influence the immune response, such as inflammation, while on the other hand, CB2 receptors influence pain, coordination and brain function, mood, appetite and thoughts.
Impact of CBD on the immune system
CBD, or cannabidiol, has an indirect interaction with CB1 and CB2 receptors. Therefore, instead of replacing endocannabinoids, CBD stimulates the body to produce more. Most importantly, CBD has the ability to inhibit and stimulate the activity of the immune system.
This means that the effect of CBD on your immune system depends entirely on how your body functions. In previous research, CBD has been shown to increase the creation of white blood cells in immunosuppressed patients, which helps the immune response in HIV patients.
It has also been shown in other research that CBD decreases immune responses such as inflammation in patients with autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis. Consequently, CBD cannabidiol should be considered an immune system modulator, rather than a stimulant or suppressant.
How does CBD interact with the immune system?
Cannabidiol CBD, a non-psychoactive component of cannabis sativa, is a phytocannabinoid that acts on the endocannabinoid system and can help keep the immune system under control.
TRPV2, or transient receptor potential vanilloid 2, is a protein that helps cells communicate with their extracellular environment. It is also essential for immune system health. The immune system can be regulated with CBD, as this cannabidiol stimulates TRPV2, as well as other transient receptor potential (TRP) channels involved in immune support.

Increased Natural Killer Cells
CBD oil has been shown to regulate the immune system in animal research exploring autoimmune health. This is by reducing the activity of T cells, B cells and subsets of T helper and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Outside of the autoimmune context, however, CBD promotes the activity of natural killer cells, which are a type of white blood cell.
The body’s response to the presence of viruses is dominated by natural killer cells. In addition, CBD also promotes the activation of natural killer T-cells, which have characteristics of T-cells and natural killer cells. CBD in vitro has been found to have activities that are beneficial for people who want to keep their liver immune system healthy.
Maintains a healthy gut microbiota
Another way to regulate the immune system with CBD has to do with the gastrointestinal tract. In this series of organs there is a large amount of organized lymphoid tissue, scattered innate and adaptive effector cells, which together constitute a large percentage of the immune system.
The gut microbiota, which is nothing more than a collection of beneficial and bad bacteria present in the intestines, plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy immune system.

Does THC affect the immune system?
With regard to immune function, THC is particularly active. It binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors. However, when THC binds to CB1 receptors, which control the functioning of the mind, it becomes a psychoactive substance. It can also block CB1 receptors, which notify the body if you feel pain.
The binding mechanism at CB2 receptors has the greatest impact on the immune system. THC has been found to trigger immunosuppressive proteins after connecting to CB2 receptors and affecting T-cells, according to a 1994 study.
This is hopeful news for people suffering from autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease, as it will reduce inflammation in the body. The effects of THC on monkeys infected with simian immunodeficiency virus were investigated by the University of Louisiana in 2011.
The research consisted of giving THC to monkeys 28 days before they received the monkey immunodeficiency virus. The findings revealed that the viral load was reduced and the lifespan of the primate was prolonged.
Healthy inflammatory response
CBD is well known for its ability to control the inflammatory response. This cannabidiol promotes a healthy inflammatory response in the lungs of animals. For example, in mice exposed to a lung irritant, it was found to improve lung function.
CBD improved markers of healthy lungs in one study, including lower total lung resistance and elastance, leukocyte migration into the lungs, myeloperoxidase activity in lung tissue, and protein concentration. Healthy levels of cytokines (TNF and IL-6) and chemokines (MCP-1 and MIP-2) were also obtained.
All of this could contribute to improved respiratory function.
Calming effect in stressful situations
Long-term psychological stress has been linked to loss of immunity. For its part, CBD is known to play an important role in a balanced stress response. CBD directly activates the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor, unlike natural cannabinoids, which act on the CB1 receptor.
CBD’s potential to modify cerebral blood flow in brain regions involved in anxiety, such as the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus and cingulate cortex, is also related to its stress-relieving properties.
