CBD as Muscular Relaxant for Contractures
Many athletes use CBD oil to improve their contractures. Find out why.
People who practice sport regularly are very prone to suffer
muscle aches and injuries
which, in some cases, force them to temporarily interrupt their training sessions, thus impairing their sporting performance. This is why, increasingly, the world of both professional and amateur sport echoes the benefits of CBD as muscle relaxant and treatment for contractures. Various scientific studies support the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of Cannabidiol. CBD is one of the main natural cannabinoids present in hemp that is responsible, among other things, to counteract the side effects of THC, the plant’s psychoactive cannabinoid. It is used in a multitude of disparate disciplines and many people are now using CBD before surfing.
Since 2018 the World Anti-Doping Committee has removed cannabidiol from its list of banned substances so that today elite athletes can benefit from this substance without fear of being disqualified by dopping.
CBD is definitely a natural alternative to the analgesic and soothing drugs we have in our drawer. By oral or by oil massages with high CBD content we can soothe the pain and relax the contracted muscles.

How Can CBD Help Us Relieve Muscle Contractures?
First, let’s go over what exactly a muscle contracture is:
A muscle contracture is a whole muscle that, for overwork, has been permanently retracted and strained. Overwork can be caused by various reasons such as stress, cold, muscle microlesions or visceral problems. As the muscle is in constant tension muscle tone is increased (inflammation), the blood does not arrive well and toxic wastes that produce pain accumulate. Both the symptoms and the root of the contractures are traditionally treated in physiotherapy with massages and stretches that relax muscle fibers allowing the muscle to return to its normal state.
To better understand how CBD can treat contractures we need to understand what the endocannabinoid system of the human body is. It is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids that act as neurotransmitters and connect with cannabinoid receptors. While we all know the circulatory, respiratory or digestive system, few of us have heard about the endocanabinoid system whose existence has been proven since the 1990s with cloning of the first identified cannabinoid receptor, CB1. A couple of years later the CB2 receptor was identified but it is still being investigated which biological functions regulate the CB2 system. There is evidence that the Endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating physiological processes such as feeling pain, mood, appetite or memory.
Our body naturally produces endocannabinoids to regulate certain processes. So CBD phytocannabinoid mimics the cannabinoids produced by our body and interacts directly with the brain and central nervous system.
How does CBD work in contracture?
Anti-inflammatory effect
An adequate dose of CBD oil will regulate the endocanabinoid system which will activate our immune system by sending anti-inflammatory signals throughout our body. Inflammation associated with a contracture or trigger point will disappear.
Analgesic effect
On the other hand, Cannabidiol has a powerful analgesic effect. The pain of your contracture will be reduced which will also allow the muscle to relax naturally.
Muscle and Vascular Relaxant
CBD is a vascular relaxer that will make blood flow better in the contracture area. It will also relax muscle fibers. Patients with symptoms of rheumatism, tendonitis and other inflammatory diseases have shown improvements in muscle spasms after taking this cannabinoid. In this study, the mice that were supplied CBD were the fastest in reducing muscle spasms and getting muscles to relax compared to mice that were supplied with other cannabinoids.
Reduces anxiety
Many contractures are caused or aggravated by anxiety and stress. CBD has been shown in numerous studies that it is able to regulate cortisone and help relax in stress and anxiety situations.
Induce sleep
CBD induces sleep and improves rest. Every athlete knows that good sleep is essential for muscle growth and recovery so it is no less when we need to recover from a contracture. A dose of CBD before bed will help you fall asleep earlier and deeper by preventing you from getting out of the middle of the night.
What is the best way to take CBD to relax muscles and eliminate contractures?
There is no “better way”. Every patient and experience is different. Being a natural remedy that is not harmful to our health we can try different doses and formats to find the one that best suits us. It is worth considering the concentration of each CBD oil on the market. By oral route the absorption is faster and total so we can notice the effects sooner than by topical route. It is recommended to start with low doses and gradually increase until we notice the beneficial effects. Throughout the treatment we may go up or down depending on the progression. A combination of osteopathic therapy with massages with high CBD oils is ideal for relaxing tense muscle fibers that cause the contracture.
CBD as the ideal complement for athletes
There is no doubt that CBD improves athletic performance in addition to helping with the contractures it can cause. Numerous elite athletes have joined CBD fever:
