Can CBD be an anti-inflammatory for carpal tunnel?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition caused by a nerve in the hand called the median nerve that is compressed inside the carpal tunnel in the right or left hand. It causes pain, numbness, tingling and a variety of other symptoms, and affects approximately 3% of the world’s population. At Higea CBD we have already talked about how CBD can help you with your muscle contractions and, fortunately, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, cannabidiol can also be a good option if you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
It is a fairly complex and frequent problem, especially for women. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects the median nerve in the hand supplying the first three fingers. The median nerve is located in the carpal tunnel which is closed by the ring ligament. That hole is precisely the carpal tunnel through which some tendons and arteries pass in addition to the median nerve. The various reasons why the median nerve is compressed are unknown, although there is some evidence as to why this occurs. Some of the causes include:
- Genetic factors for having the narrowest tunnel
- Accumulation of liquids in the area that causes the tissues in the tunnel to swell and increase in volume, which makes them have less space
- Some irritated medullary level that promotes carpal tunnel compression

In any case, there are numerous people who suffer from this syndrome and the cause is none of those mentioned. This is why there is no clear or standardized treatment to alleviate the condition. Surgery is often needed to cure carpal tunnel syndrome.
The most common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include
- Loss of strength in the hand
- Pain and discomfort
- Inflammation
- Tingling and numbness of the hand
- Loss of sensitivity
What non-medication treatments are available to cure carpal tunnel syndrome?
Wrist massage
Massaging the wrist helps to flex and stretch the ring ligament which may succeed in decompressing or opening the carpal tunnel.
Deflate the structures of the wrist
Sometimes carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by fluid retention especially in people with hormonal changes such as pregnant women, menopause, etc … also obesity could be causing fluid accumulation. These are all causes to be considered and can be treated to avoid the problem.
Neurodynamic exercises
With the help of a physical therapist, mobility exercises can be performed to help release the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. It is one of the treatments that work best to relieve symptoms without the need for surgery.
Diet
Take a controlled diet to cleanse the body by eliminating toxins and reduce inflammation of the tissues to see if this decompresses the carpal tunnel.
Nighttime rest splints
To help rest the tendons and muscles of the hand, patients are often advised to sleep with splints to help the hand rest at night.
What drugs can help relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Usually if you have symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome you will be prescribed anti-inflammatory medication to try to relieve the inflammation of the tissues inside the carpal tunnel and to try to decompress the median nerve.
However, since the main symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are pain and inflammation, cannabis is an attractive option. And while common medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids can offer effective relief from carpal tunnel symptoms, their misuse or continued use can cause side effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, if taken continuously and for a long time, can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, heartburn, headaches, dizziness, liver and kidney problems, high blood pressure and other illnesses that can be more serious than your carpal tunnel disease.
Anti-inflammatory and analgesic CBD
The CBD is both anti-inflammatory and analgesic. CBD will act by supporting the endocannabinoid system to balance and achieve homeostasis throughout our body. The cannabinoid cannabidiol will connect with the cannabinoid receptors to send signals to the immune system in order to de-inflate the areas that are not functioning properly in our body. If the cause of our carpal tunnel syndrome is inflammation, it will disappear and produce a relaxing effect on the area. Even though the symptoms will stop with a CBD-based treatment, this will only indicate that your problem is due to inflammation so to solve it definitively without the need to depend on a CBD treatment you will have to find out the cause of the inflammation, what other functions of your body are failing to make the carpal tunnel inflame by compressing and damaging your median nerve in the hand.
How do you use CBD to relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?
Today we can enjoy countless products that contain CBD. Although you might think that since it’s a muscle pain the best way to administer CBD might be the topical route, you don’t only have this option. In fact, to achieve an analgesic effect by administering CBD topically, you should massage the area with CBD oils and creams with a high concentration of the cannabinoid to increase its bioavailability. You can try small doses of sublingual CBD oil as a supplement to topical treatments to increase the bioavailability of cannabidiol in your body to further support your endocannabinoid system.
At Higea CBD we recommend that if you suspect that you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, you should see a doctor or physiotherapist who will diagnose and follow up on your specific case. In some patients these ailments can be due to other more serious pathologies so it is very important to always ask for a specialist’s opinion.
