CBD oil for neuropathic pain

Next we will see what neuropathy consists of and the impact it has on the quality of life. We will also look at how neuropathic pain is usually treated. We will also take a look at how CBD oil works, and address the benefits of using cannabidiol to relieve peripheral neuropathic pain.

What is peripheral neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is a neurological condition characterized by damage to the nerves of the peripheral nervous system. This is the network that connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.
As for what causes it, there are actually a variety of reasons for this type of neuropathy. These include the following:
- An automobile accident, for example, can result in physical injury or trauma.
- Diabetes is also a cause of peripheral neuropathy.
- Certain chemotherapy and cancer drugs.
- Blood and vascular problems.
- Infections and autoimmune disorders.
- Hormonal and nutritional imbalances
- Kidney and liver disorders.
How does peripheral neuropathy affect quality of life?
All of these conditions can be aggravated on their own, but when peripheral neuropathy is added to the mix, it can have a significant impact on quality of life. In fact, when neuropathy damages the motor nerves, quality of life is compromised and some patients suffer from muscle fatigue, uncontrollable spasms and painful cramps.
Damage to sensory nerves in the peripheral nervous system, on the other hand, can trigger life-altering symptoms, including loss of the sense of touch (which can affect balance), increased pain sensation to stimuli that do not usually cause pain, as well as problems coping with pain, which further complicates pain management.
Finally, when the autonomic nerves are weakened, symptoms such as excessive sweating, high blood pressure, and gastrointestinal distress may occur. The question arises: What is the best way to deal with these different neuropathic symptoms?
Treatment options for peripheral neuropathy
The first step in treating peripheral neuropathy is to recognize and treat the underlying cause. This will provide immediate relief from some of the most distressing symptoms of neuropathy. Other options include mechanical aids such as hand and foot orthotics, medications, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and in certain cases probably surgery.
However, many people with neuropathy prefer to use complementary and alternative medicines. Acupuncture, massage, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and herbal medications are examples of this type of alternative medicine.
CBD oil falls into this category of alternative treatments for peripheral neuropathy. Let’s see why CBD has become an alternative to treat neuropathic pain.
Why do many people use CBD oil for neuropathic pain?
CBD medications have been shown in studies to help relieve pain. In fact, according to a 2018 study published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, pain, anxiety, and depression were the top three medical conditions that led people to use CBD.
That research also found that 36% of respondents said that this hemp plant extract worked very well on its own to alleviate their medical problems, while only 4.3% said it did not.
Much research has also pointed to cannabinoids as providing benefits explicitly for difficult-to-treat pain, according to this 2008 report. For example, the researchers mention how in 2005 Canada approved Sativex, a cannabis-derived nasal spray, to treat central neuropathic pain in people with multiple sclerosis.
In 2006, a request was made to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct research on Sativex to learn more about its effects on cancer pain.
Cannabinoid analgesics have generally been well tolerated in clinical trials with appropriate adverse effect profiles, the researchers add. In other words, CBD use has very few negative side effects. Dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue are among the most common side effects, although they are generally not severe enough to cause users to stop using CBD.
Benefits of CBD oil for peripheral neuropathic pains
One of the most important advantages of using CBD medication to treat diabetic neuropathic pain is that it eliminates the need for pain medication. This is particularly significant given that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 130 people die every day in the United States alone due to opioid overdose.
Also, we should keep in mind that when it comes to general wellness, over-the-counter pain relievers are no better. Chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs actually increases the risk of peptic ulcer disease, acute kidney failure, stroke and myocardial infarction in older adults, according to studies published in the Annals of Long-Term Care.
This class of pain relievers has the ability to aggravate chronic conditions and interfere with prescription medications, such as blood thinners and corticosteroids. In contrast, the use of CBD-containing neuropathic pain creams eliminates these common and potentially risky side effects, making it a viable treatment option.
Cannabis oil for neuropathic pain dosage
Many people don’t know how to relieve neuropathic pain using CBD. As in other cases, the recommended CBD dosage varies from person to person. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a doctor who specializes in neuropathic pain medication.
Ideally, start with a very low dose and test the effects for relief of neuropathic symptoms. That is, start with a small dose and gradually increase until you find the dose that works for you.
