CBD oil for migraine
Migraines can be extremely debilitating . People with this condition often experience other symptoms such as nausea and sensitivity to light. However, did you know that you can use CBD oil for migraines? In fact, if you don’t know how to get rid of migraines fast, CBD may be the solution you need.
This is relevant, as migraines affect approximately 15% of the world’s population. In fact, this type of headache is the fifth leading cause of emergency room visits in the United States alone.
A migraine is more than a throbbing headache. It is a neurological condition that causes excruciating stabbing pain that can keep you in bed for days. In addition, movement, light, sound and other stimuli can cause pain, fatigue, nausea, visual problems, numbness, among other symptoms.

What are migraines?
Migraine is a common neurological condition that manifests itself as a throbbing headache on one side of the head. Physical exertion, lights, sounds, or smells are likely to aggravate a migraine. A migraine has been known to last for several hours or even days. In addition to being a genetic condition, it is also the sixth most debilitating disease in the world.
What’s more disturbing is that there are about 150 different forms of headaches, which are classified into two groups: primary and secondary headaches. A migraine is a primary headache, meaning it is not the result of another medical condition. Primary headache disorders are clinical diagnoses, meaning they cannot be diagnosed with a blood test or imaging test. A secondary headache is a sign that something else is going on in your body.
Migraine symptoms
Headache is the most common symptom of migraine. The sensation of pain can be described as a pounding or throbbing. It may begin as a dull ache and progress to mild, moderate, or severe stabbing pain. If left untreated, this headache will progress from mild to severe.
It is also common that the pain may go from one side of the head to the other, or it may affect the front of the head, the back of the head, or the entire head. Some people have pain in the eye or temple area, as well as in the face, sinuses, jaw, or neck.
Other common symptoms of migraine include the following:
- Sensitivity to noise, light, and even odors.
- Loss of appetite.
- Nausea, vomiting, plus abdominal pain and upsetstomach.
- sweating or chills
- Blurred vision.
- Pale skin color.
What causes migraines?
Migraines have complicated and poorly understood origins. When a person experiences a headache, certain nerves in the blood vessels send pain signals to your brain. This causes inflammatory compounds to be released into the nerves and blood vessels of the head. To date, science has not been able to determine why these nerves behave the way they do.
In addition, current research indicates that migraines arise when the pain signaling threshold decreases in response to inflammatory substances. Migraines are most likely caused by environmental and hormonal factors. On the other hand, migraine medications often cause side effects, which has led to a decline in migraine medication research.
Can CBD oil be used for migraine?
Due to its multiple health benefits, many are already considering CBD as a treatment for migraine. Whether or not there is a strong migraine medication, CBD‘s analgesic, anti-inflammatory , and anti-emetic characteristics can help relieve the pain and nausea associated with migraines.
Many migraine patients are receptive to novel medications that promise to help them manage migraine pain. However, both scientists and patients have recently become interested in cannabidiol CBD migraine oil. As said before, the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea characteristics of CBD can help to alleviate the symptoms of this disease.
While there are currently no clinical studies investigating the efficacy of CBD oil as a treatment for migraine, several reviews and academic studies highlight the importance of modifying the endocannabinoid system. Also the use of cannabinoids such as CBD as a potential therapy to treat migraine.
Animal studies to treat migraines with CBD
Research has shown that the regions of the brain that process pain include endocannabinoid receptors. Triptans, a class of drugs used primarily to treat migraines and cluster headaches, have been shown to target some of the same signaling pathways as anandamide (an endocannabinoid). This supports the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in the treatment of migraine.
In fact, CBD has been found in animal studies to reduce inflammation and discomfort by interacting with certain receptors in the endocannabinoid system.
What do the studies say?
CBD can also block the production of particular proteins related to inflammatory pain and modify the immune cell system, according to the same study. The use of cannabis to modulate the endocannabinoid system may provide a tolerable pharmacological treatment for migraines.
Another study published in “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research” in 2016 suggested that migraines may be induced in part by an insufficiency of the endocannabinoid system. This hypothesis could be true, as research from 2017, revealed low levels of anandamide in the cerebrospinal fluid of migraine patients.
Low levels of anandamide may be the result of a disruption in the endocannabinoid system. Consequently, the evidence points to cannabinoids as a potential therapy for treating chronic migraine.
