CBD and celiac disease
CBD and celiac disease is the topic that we address on this occasion, as this cannabidiol could alleviate the symptoms of this condition. However, it is important to know what celiac disease is and what its symptoms are.
Foods such as crackers and bread are products that may contain wheat, rye or barley. Although delicious, these foods can trigger an immune response. In this case, celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects people who consume products containing gluten.
CBD, a compound derived from the cannabis plant, has been shown to help in the treatment of a variety of autoimmune diseases. However, can CBD alleviate some symptoms of celiac disease? Read on and find out the answer.

What is celiac disease?
To be more precise, celiac disease in adults and children is a serious autoimmune disease, genetic in nature, and is activated by consuming a protein known as gluten. As mentioned above, gluten is found in rye, barley, and wheat.
Before discussing the use of CBD for celiac disease, it is important to understand that celiac disease can manifest itself in a variety of ways. When a person with this disease consumes gluten, the immune system perceives it as a threat and attacks it.
The villi in the intestines, which attempt to digest gluten along with other foods, are destroyed as a result of this process. Malnutrition is the result of damaged villi, which makes it virtually impossible for the body to absorb the nutrients it needs.
The most dangerous thing about this is that if a person with celiac disease continues to consume gluten, they can develop osteoporosis and infertility. It can even be the beginning of other autoimmune disorders such as type 1 diabetes, thyroid disease and Sjögren’s syndrome.
In addition, people with celiac disease are at risk for serious health problems if left untreated. Celiac disease has no cure at the moment and the only therapy is a gluten-free diet.
What are the symptoms of celiac disease?
We now talk about celiac disease symptoms. As stated above, the immune reaction occurs when a person consumes foods containing gluten, (wheat, rye and barley). That is, if a person with celiac disease is exposed to this protein, their immune system attacks the intestinal wall.
This disease has the potential to have a negative impact on health due to the presence of key structures such as villi throughout the small intestine. Unfortunately, unless you avoid all gluten-based or gluten-containing foods and substances, there is no cure for celiac disease.
As for the symptoms of celiac disease, the most common are the following:
- Swelling
- Diarrhea
- Excess gases
- Weight loss
- Iron deficiency anemia and fatigue
- Constipation
- Mouth ulcers
- Itchy rashes
In addition, when celiac disease occurs in adults, symptoms may include:
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Miscarriage
- Infertility
- Depression
- Convulsions
- Dermatitis herpetiformis
It should be noted that the symptoms of celiac disease vary from person to person. It is sometimes difficult to identify celiac disease because of the wide range of symptoms that can appear.
Someone may be experiencing diarrhea and gastrointestinal pain, while another may be feeling irritation or despair. In addition, it is common for symptoms of celiac disease to appear in some patients early in childhood, while others remain healthy into adulthood. There are even those who show no signs or symptoms at all.
CBD and celiac disease
Due to the multiple benefits of CBD, many are now wondering if CBD can be used for celiac disease. For this it is important to take into account what science says about it.
It is known with certainty, that celiac disease should be treated with a gluten-free diet. In 2003, an Italian study focused on young people suffering from the disease. It was shown that cannabinoid receptors in the gut, are more common in untreated people than in those on a gluten-free diet for more than a year.
Endocannabinoid system plays an important role
The above is relevant as CBD, as a natural antidepressant, has great potential to help with that. Finally, CBD may help prevent additional health problems associated with celiac disease, such as nerve damage. Also, if a person is worried, CBD can help reduce discomfort and make them feel more relaxed.
The particular characteristics of the endocannabinoid system were also examined in other research on CBD and celiac disease. Although their data are inconclusive, the researchers demonstrated a substantial link between abnormalities of the endocannabinoid system and the etiology of celiac disease.
However, more research and studies are needed to fully understand the therapeutic effects and benefits of CBD in the treatment of celiac disease symptoms. We know that CBD is an excellent dietary supplement, but it is not a cure in itself.
Therefore, the best strategy for treating the symptoms of celiac disease is to completely eliminate gluten from your diet. Nothing else is going to work as well as that.
Does CBD contain gluten?
Without a doubt, pure CBD oil is gluten-free. CBD oil (also known as cannabis oil), is a gluten-free botanical extract derived from the hemp plant. As a result, we believe that anything derived from the hemp plant alone, with no additional ingredients, flavors or preservatives, is gluten-free, as the hemp plant itself does not contain gluten.
In any case, be sure to read all ingredients before consuming any product containing gluten. Of course, there are some CBD products that may or may not include gluten. If you’re trying to live a gluten-free lifestyle, it’s essential to know which products don’t contain gluten. While most high-quality, organic CBD products are gluten-free, there may be exceptions.
