What is ocimene and guaiol and its properties?
As mentioned before, up to 200 different terpenes can be found in cannabis, all of which work together to give the plant its distinct aromas and effects. In this particular article, we will tell you about ocimene and guaiol, as well as their properties.
These are two of the most common terpenes in cannabis, which as we know, is made up of hundreds of different compounds that work together to give the plant its distinctive properties. While cannabinoids are often credited with the medicinal capacity of cannabis, terpenes play an equally important role. Among these terpenes, there are some such as bilasobol or nerolidol.
Although further extensive research on both substances is still needed, we will discuss what we know so far and what this represents in terms of their possible applications.

What is ocimene?
Terpenes such as humulene, pinene, linalool or camphene are aromatic oils that give each cannabis strain its complex and distinctive aroma. These terpenes are made by the same glands that produce the cannabinoids THC and CBD. Hemp contains a large amount of such terpenes, which are believed to have a variety of health benefits and medicinal properties.
Ocimene, specifically, is a complex terpene found in a variety of hemp strains. Below we talk about its profile, as well as the strains that contain it and of course the health benefits associated with this powerful terpene.
Ocimene, like guaiol, imparts a sweet, herbaceous flavour to many cannabis strains. It is an acyclic monoterpene with citrus and floral notes in its aromatic profile. While there is still much to learn about the properties of ocimene, researchers believe it has a variety of therapeutic effects and medicinal benefits.
It is also important to note that this terpene can be found in three different forms:
- -α-ocimene
- -cis-β-ocimene
- -trans-β-ocimene
In addition, it is naturally present in a variety of plants and herbs, and is believed to be part of their defensive mechanisms. In fact, aphids, which are common pests that can damage cannabis plants, tend to avoid strains with high ocimene content.
Some of the plants and herbs in which ocimene can be found include:
- Pepper
- Handle
- Parsley
- Basil
- Orchid
- Tarragon
- Mint
Benefits and properties of ocimene
Many studies are currently being conducted on the benefits and effects of hemp terpenes such as ocimene. There are a number of studies showing that it has substantial health and healing benefits, but more research is needed to fully understand its effects and healing potential.
Researchers assume that this terpene has antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic properties. Let’s take a look at some of the most important uses and benefits of ocimene.
Antimicrobial
This terpene has been shown in studies to have antimicrobial properties. The antimicrobial properties of terpenes such as ocimene in Ferulago carduchorum essential oil were investigated in this 2014 study. The researchers concluded that it has a high efficacy against fungal infections such as candida albicans and even different types of malaria.
It also has anti-inflammatory properties
The anti-inflammatory effects of ocimene are one of its most studied benefits. A scientific study found that the flower Citrus unshiu, which contains ocimene as its main compound, has anti-inflammatory properties that can help human health.
The research also revealed that ocimene reduces the development of inflammatory cytokines in the body.
Antiviral
Cannabis terpenes, including ocimene, alpha-pinene and cineole, have antiviral properties, according to this report published in 2008. These terpenes may be useful in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), according to researchers, due to their antiviral properties.
May be used to treat diabetes
Ocimene was found to have positive effects on the treatment of diabetic symptoms in a 2013 study. The study found that ocimene can prevent the spread of major enzymes, as shown by examination of essential oils from black pepper seeds.
It is an essential component of this oil and has been shown to inhibit key enzymes related to type 2 diabetes as well as hypertension.
What is guaiol?
Guaiol, also known as champacol, is a terpene unlike any other. While many of the terpenes found in cannabis are oil-based, guaiol is alcohol-based. It is not as common as other cannabis terpenes, and although there is not much research on it, its existence is potentially significant.
The sesquiterpenoid alcohol is actually guaiol. This is because terpenes with a multi-ring molecular structure are known as sesquiterpenes. The terpenes found in cypress pine are of this type. This is understandable considering that guaiol has a fresh, woody, piney scent.
However, guaiol is also responsible for the aromas of a variety of other plants. For example, nutmeg, tea tree, conifers, apples, cumin and lilacs contain guaiol. Some people use it to relieve coughs and congestion, as well as an insect repellent.
Properties of guaiol
It is known to have antimicrobial properties that are potent and essential. Guaiol was found to be effective against several bacterial strains in a report published in 2007.
Anticarcinogenic
According to a 2016 study published in Oncotarget, guaiol can inhibit cancer cells in cases of non-small cell lung cancer .
Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
Another research conducted in 2017, found that essential oil extracted from the fruit of Xylopia sericea was successful in destroying Staphylococcus aureus. This is the bacteria that causes staph infections. Guaiol can constitute up to 14% of the essential oil.
Guaiol may influence the way cannabis affects the body’s daily functions. It is likely to help with anti-inflammatory symptoms, so this is good news for those with joint problems.
