CBD and THC: How do they differ?
CBD and THC are natural substances generated from cannabis. However, the CBD molecule differs from the THC molecule. Sowhat is the difference between CBD and THC?
THC and CBD are two of the best known cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD and THC are produced by both cannabis and hemp. Cannabis, on the other hand, has a higher THC content. On the other hand, the concentration of CBD is higher in hemp.
The potential health impacts and benefits of medical cannabis have piqued people’s interest in recent years. These two cannabinoids have become very popular thanks to their properties.

Key aspects of CBD and THC
CBD molecule and THC molecule are chemically almost identical. They have 30 hydrogen atoms, 21 carbon atoms and 2 oxygen atoms in their structure. However, because these atoms are arranged differently, CBD and THC have different properties.
If you’ve never used cannabis before, here’s what you need to know about CBD and THC.
What is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid produced by marijuana plants. CBD doesn’t get you high, that is, it doesn’t produce the psychoactive effect associated with marijuana. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about this aspect if you consume hemp-derived CBD oil. This is because CBD oil contains less than 0.2% THC to be legally marketed.
Additionally, CBD provides a diverse set of medicinal benefits. People who regularly consume CBD do so primarily for health and wellness reasons, rather than for recreational use.
What is THC?
The main psychoactive element in cannabis is precisely THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. The THC molecule activates the brain’s reward system by allowing the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This is important because dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in pleasure and mood.
Unlike the CBD molecule, THC produces a feeling of euphoria by stimulating the release of dopamine. THC is most commonly ingested by smoking marijuana, although it is also found in capsules, candy and oils.
What is the difference between CBD and THC?
Neither THC nor CBD have any effect on the endocannabinoid system, which plays an important role in homeostasis. However, researchers are still figuring out how this complex system works and how it affects processes such as memory, appetite, sleep, mood and fertility.
As mentioned above, THC and CBD have some similarities, but also some very important differences.
Characteristics of CBD
- It doesn’t produce psychoactive effects, so it doesn’t get you high like THC does.
- The CBD molecule does not directly bind to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, even though it has more than 65 molecular targets.
- It allows the body to achieve and maintain high levels of endocannabinoids in the blood.
- In addition, the
CBD can reduce the effects of THC
. - The CBD molecule is primarily associated with medical, health and wellness benefits, but has other uses as well.
- Even in large doses, CBD does not cause toxicity in the body.
- CBD does not harm animals.
- Both hemp and marijuana can be used to extract CBD.
- Hemp-derived CBD products are legal in many countries.
Characteristics of THC
- The THC molecule gets you high, which is why it is considered a psychoactive substance.
- THC is often associated with recreational cannabis use, but it also has a number of therapeutic benefits.
- Lower doses of THC can
reduce stress and anxiety
but due to its biphasic nature, higher doses may exacerbate these conditions in sensitive users. - Through the CB1 cannabinoid receptor, THC communicates with the brain and sends signals to the body.
- Marijuana plants are the only source of THC from which it can be extracted.
- In countries such as Canada, Uruguay and the United States, THC has been legalized for recreational use.
CBD and THC: How do they affect the brain?
For most cannabis users, the effect of THC is a pleasurable experience. A relaxed state of mind, reduced physical tension and even improved cognition are common effects of THC.
As long as the THC dosage is kept low, it can effectively reduce anxiety. The problem is that high doses of THC can exacerbate these feelings in sensitive users, as mentioned earlier in the article.
In contrast, CBD doesn’t get you high, and for the range of emotional effects it uses a less direct mechanism to achieve its results. It basically allows you to handle situations that would otherwise drive you crazy if you use CBD.
As an added benefit, CBD can help reduce the intensity of a THC reaction by binding to the CB1 receptors that the THC is trying to bind to. Therefore, the intoxicating effects of THC are counteracted by mixing marijuana with CBD hemp flower.
It is important to be clear that both compounds have psychoactive properties because they both affect your mind in some way. However, the term “Intoxicant” would be a better way to describe the differences between CBD and THC. I mean, when THC enters your body, it intoxicates it, which is exactly what happens.
As far as cannabidiol CBD is concerned, it is not considered toxic because it does not cause feelings of euphoria. However, it can be classified as a psychotropic because its properties help regulate mood and emotional stability.
How does the CBD molecule and the THC molecule affect your body?
If you’re looking for a more body-focused experience, the
CBD products
may be the way to go. Not only can they help you reduce inflammation, but they can also relieve physical pain, speed up the healing process, and increase your resistance to stress.
