What is constipation?
Bowel movements that become less frequent and stools that are more difficult to pass are indicators of constipation. Changes in diet or lifestyle, as well as a lack of fiber, are the most common causes of constipation. Constipation is correctly defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week. How often you “go to the bathroom” varies greatly from person to person. How does constipation occur?
If you want to fight constipation effectively, it’s important to first understand how the condition occurs. Constipation occurs when your colon absorbs too much water from your stool. This makes the stool dry and difficult to pass out of your body. Nutrients are absorbed by our bodies as food passes through the digestive tract.
The partially digested food passes through the small intestine into the large intestine, generally known as the colon. The colon collects water from the waste, resulting in a solid substance known as feces.
The problem is that food can travel very slowly through the digestive tract if you are constipated. This allows the colon to absorb the water from the waste for an excessive period of time. As a result, the stool becomes dry, hard, and more difficult to pass.
Chronic constipation: risk factors
Don’t think you’re the only one who suffers from constipation. In many countries, constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints. In the United States, for example, at least 2.5 million people visit the doctor for a constipation problem.
You should also know that constipation affects people of all ages on a regular basis. However, certain people and circumstances are more likely to cause what is known as chronic constipation.
Risk factors include:
- Older adults are less active, their metabolism is slower, and they have weaker muscle contraction strength in their digestive tract compared to younger people.
- Being a woman is also a risk factor, especially during pregnancy and after childbirth. Hormonal changes in women make them more prone to constipation. During pregnancy, for example, the baby squashes the intestines in the uterus, which impedes the flow of stool.
- Not eating enough high-fiber foods can lead to constipation. Fiber allows food to move more easily through the digestive tract.
- Using certain prescription drugs, as well as having certain neurological and digestive diseases.
Why CBD can be a remedy for constipation?

We all have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), which produces and uses cannabinoids, which are the active ingredients in marijuana. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids that our ECS produces on its own. Identifying the causes of constipation can help you decide which treatments are most effective. A combination of the following remedies may be needed to address the condition.
- Drink water. Drinking six to eight glasses of water a day can keep your stools soft, and allow you to have more comfortable and frequent bowel movements.
- Exercise. Physical activity can push on the bowels and stimulate the movement of stool.
- Eat fiber. Soluble fiber gives density to the stool, while insoluble fiber regulates the rate at which it moves through the colon.
- Abdominal massage. It should be a clockwise motion, as this helps push the stool in the colon into the rectum.
- Lemon juice. Lemon juice helps to eliminate toxins from the body, and at the same time improve intestinal stimulation.
- Molasses. You only need a tablespoon of molasses in the evening to stimulate bowel movements in the morning.
Infusions for constipation
Regular consumption of herbal teas is another of the most effective remedies to treat constipation. That is, the better lubricated your bowels are, the more moisture will remain in your stool, and the more regular your bowel movements will be.
Infusions containing some herbs can help with more than just meeting your daily fluid needs. The peel, for example, has been used for years as a laxative. It is also available as a supplement and in some herbal teas.
Another herb that many people use as a laxative is senna. It is used in herbal teas and as a supplement, as is the peel. This herb prevents the colon from reabsorbing water, which causes more moisture to remain in the stool.
It is generally recommended that you only consume constipation teas made from herbs containing senna or cascara.
