What is linalool and its properties?

Linalool is a terpene found in cannabis, as well as in many flowers and spice plants. It is characterized by a floral fragrance with a spicy touch. In addition, linalool, as well as other terpenes, is used in many industrial applications due to its natural origin and good smell. It is present in the cannabis plant along with other terpenes such as bilasobol, camphene and geraniol. Like the other terpenes, it gives it a CBD aroma and flavour.

In fact, it is used as a common fragrance in soaps, shampoos and hand creams. It is also commonly used to give a natural smell to cleaning products and detergents. Not only that, it has been shown to be effective against fleas, fruit flies and cockroaches.

Linalool what is it?

Linalool is a terpene that has one of the best known aromas of all terpenes. It is not for nothing that linalool is widely used in cosmetics. Connoisseurs of fine herbs are often unaware that this amusing aroma is already familiar to them. It is the signature fragrance of a variety of well-known scents and beauty lines, and is often used in items to promote relaxation.

This terpene has a floral and slightly sweet fragrance when first inhaled. Although it also has a hint of mint, which is similar to lavender and is therefore widely used around the world.

Linalool is a colourless liquid and a monoterpene alcohol. Many fruits, flowers (including rose) and spice plants, such as bay, tangerine, spearmint, cypress, lemon and ylang-ylang, contain this terpene.

linalool terpene

The aroma of the terpene linalool

Many people often compare linalool to lavender. The fragrance isn’t just lavender; there’s a hint of spice in it. However, the individual aroma of linalool in cannabis is difficult to discern.

Because cannabis has such a diverse range of terpenes, linalool has a rich and complex aroma. It is almost impossible to distinguish the aromas of individual terpenes in cannabis. In fact, when you place several terpene scents on top of each other, the fragrance changes drastically.

The truth is that the aroma of cannabis is unmistakable and very pleasant for those who consume it thanks to the combination of several terpenes.

Is linalool safe?

Linalool is safe for human consumption in small amounts provided by natural plants. In 1988, the U.S. National Toxicology Program reported that 3.6 million kilograms of linalool were used worldwide. Which tells us about its enormous popularity.

It is worth mentioning that most of this terpene is used in fragrances, but some is also used as a natural food flavoring. A 2017 research, found that the human body safely metabolizes linalool into harmless byproducts. THC, CBD and other cannabinoids can last for weeks in the body. Terpenes, on the other hand, do not accumulate and are easily disposed of.

linalool properties

Properties of linalool

Linalool occurs in hundreds of different plants, which means it has a wide range of applications. In other words, this terpene is not only present in marijuana. The insecticidal properties of linalool are possibly the reason why so many plants produce it.

What happens is that plants that contain a small amount of linalool can repel insects and live long enough to produce seeds for the next generation.

Linalool also has antimicrobial properties. This is because it decreases the presence of unwanted bacteria in plants, according to this report. Basically what it does is improve the health of the plants.

linalool effects

What are the effects of linalool?

Linalool causes sedation in mammals, according to research. Several linalool-producing plants, including members of the mint family, were studied in traditional Amazonian herbal treatments.

The study findings indicate hypnotic, anticonvulsant and hypothermic effects on the central nervous system. In fact, the anticonvulsant properties of linalool were also discovered in this analysis in mice, where the rodents were given a vaporized dose of the drug.

How are linalool and anxiety related?

Linalool is used in aromatherapy for its anxiolytic properties. The evidence supports the claims of anxiolytic effects. Other research with mice looked at how linalool affected aggression, anxiety, and social interaction.

Mice exposed to linalool were less aggressive and anxious, which resulted in better social contact. These findings reinforce the idea that inhaling linalool-rich essential oils may be useful as a means of achieving relaxation and counteracting anxiety, the research article concludes. For cannabis users, a high linalool content can produce an anxiolytic effect that relieves stress.

The anti-stress properties of linalool have been verified in studies conducted at the University of Tokyo. The mild, calming and anti-stress effect of cannabis is one of its best known characteristics. This effect may be caused in part by cannabinoids and affected in part by terpenes that operate in conjunction with cannabinoids.

The body and muscles will relax until the mind is less stressed and anxious. Most people who grow their own cannabis from feminized or autoflowering seeds are looking for high quality strains that provide relief and pleasure. As any cannabis enthusiast can attest, once stress and anxiety have been relieved, true rest and relaxation begins.

linalool alzheimer

Linalool May Help Treat Alzheimer’s Disease

Some novel research has shown promising benefits for linalool in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Again, mice were included in the study. All of the mice had Alzheimer’s disease-like symptoms and were given linalool every other day.

Mice treated with linalool showed an improvement in cognitive and emotional control. It is important to clarify that while this does not suggest that linalool is a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it may be a good candidate for further research.
