Can CBD test positive for drug control?

We are all exposed to drug control if we are going to run for a sports competition, as routine control in certain jobs or if the police require it at any given time.

The world of cannabis is surrounded by a halo of uncertainty regarding its legality today. In the case of CBD it is already legal in Europe. However, we sometimes overlook that the hemp plant has been used legally for medicinal and recreational purposes for more than 5000 years by almost every major civilization that has existed on planet Earth. His criminalization is just over a century old and we have had to live in a time when the laws on it are constantly changing. This is why if we consume CBD, which is a product derived from cannabis, we have some doubts.

Thanks to science we have reached the point where we have been able to break down the cannabis plant into its cannabinoids and study its effects separately in our body. For example, we know that the cannabinoid responsible for the “high” that produces marijuana use is called THC and has effects, among others, psychoactive. However, the next most abundant cannabinoid in the hemp plant, CBD cannabidiol, has a multitude of health benefits and is non-psychoactive. The reputation of any cannabis derivative is closely associated with the effects of THC and its recreational use so it is normal to have doubts about its criminalization.

Just as we know for sure that if we consume alcohol and are given a blood alcohol test we will test positive and their criminalization has certain tolerances we should also know if a drug test will prove positive in case we are in the middle of a CBD oil treatment.

The answer is NO, if CBD oil is pure anti-drug controls do not test positive in CBD. If you want to know why, continue reading this article:

First, how do tests work to detect drugs in the body?

The most common method, screening, uses specific antibodies mimicking what our body produces to neutralize the external agent (the substance to be detected). Drug tests determine whether a sample contains the substance to be detected or its metabolites. This test will alert you to the presence of substances in the sample, but a new, more specific confirmation analysis will be needed in order to verify the type of substance and its concentration.

CBD test samples

What type of samples can be taken for testing?

Saliva :can detect the use of substances during the last hours, in the case of cannabis for a maximum of 24 hours from the time it was consumed.

Urine: These are the most common tests due to their low cost. Traces of cannabis will be detected in your body if you’ve used it up to 30 days before drug control is done depending on whether you’re a regular consumer and how much body fat you have.

Blood: As a rule, no blood drug checks are usually done but in your case cannabis and its metabolites will remain in your bloodstream for up to 7 days if you are a regular consumer.

Hair :It is the test in which traces of longer periods can be found, up to 90 days if the hair measures more than 2.5 cm. Despite not being a very common method in Western countries, it is in China, for example, where the use of most drugs is criminalized. CBD, despite being a cannabinoid, is legal in China. You can see a list of countries you can travel to with CBD here.

What substances are sought in standard drug controls?

Most tests on the market are designed to detect: Most tests on the market are designed to detect:

  • Cannabis
  • Opiates
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Steroids

There are more specific and tailor-designed tests than you need them, such as anti-doping controls. If you’re using CBD oil to treat contractures or improve your athletic performance, you don’t have to worry. CBD has not been considered a doping substance by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) since 2020.

  • Nonsterial anti-inflammatory drugs (NSIDS) such as ibuprofen- Pantoprazole

It depends on the concentration and bioavailability of how you consume your CBD you will be more or less exposed to those THC minimums reaching the 50 nano grams per millimeter that urine tests detect.

At Higea CBD, in addition to extracting our oils from hemp plants that genetically do not contain THC, we test our oils once extracted to make sure they comply with the regulations. In addition, to make sure that our clients do not get unwanted surprises when they show up for a drug check we have checked ourselves that when performing different cannabis screenings and being in full CBD treatment with Higea CBD oil,the result has always been negative.

Can topical CBD test positive in a drug test?

Regular users of marijuana in joints, pipes, etc., know that they can test positive if they are given a drug test. However, with the introduction of CBD, the range of use has expanded to include topical cannabis products such as body creams, ointments, lotions and balms. Therefore, many now wonder if topical CBD can test positive in a drug test.

As the cannabis industry evolves and expands to include innovative ways of consuming cannabis, it’s logical to ask: which of these new products will get us high, or in your case, show up in a drug test?

Most people assume that CBD oil does not contain THC. However, depending on the source of cannabis used to produce the oil, some products may contain traces of THC. It is very common for this to happen in low quality CBD oils and full spectrum tinctures. In the case of Higea CBD, we measure the exact amount and it is always less than 0.1% of our products, the legal maximum being 0.2%.

Is it true that topical CBD can test positive in a drug test?

It is well known that marijuana use can be identified in a drug test. This is because cannabis accumulates in different parts of the body, including urine, blood and even hair follicles.

In addition, cannabis is usually consumed orally, either through smoke, vapour, sweets, etc. For this reason, marijuana appears in this type of evidence. However, what happens if we experiment with cannabis in other ways?

That is, if instead of smoking a joint, we use a marijuana ointment, cream, lotion, or any other topical CBD product. You may think you’ll test positive for a drug test, and you’ll end up losing your job.

The reality is that topical CBD does not show up on the drug test. What happens in this case is that your skin acts as a protective shield between the outside world and the inner workings of your body when using topical marijuana products.

CBD does not enter the bloodstream

Although THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids are present in marijuana lotion, cream, or ointment, and are absorbed into the skin, they do not enter the bloodstream. These cannabinoids also do not reach the brain, where THC causes its characteristic psychoactive effect. Therefore, a drug test cannot detect it.

In fact, there is no way for THC to get into the bloodstream because it is not being consumed orally. The same is not true for transdermal patches, which are the only exception to topical CBD.

In other words, these patches work similarly to nicotine patches in that they release THC or CBD through the skin barrier into the bloodstream and brain. Thanks to this, the user can experience the psychoactive effects. Consequently, if you use these transdermal THC patches, and take a marijuana test, you will test positive for cannabis.

How to avoid testing positive for marijuana?

If you are a regular user of topical CBD, or even if you regularly buy pot alcohol, the following tips will help you avoid testing positive on a drug test.

  • First of all, it is essential that you do a thorough research to determine that the marijuana ointment you are using is of quality, and that the company is legitimate.
  • You also need to make sure that the CBD oil is a product extracted from a viable industrial hemp supply, and that it is not a low-quality tincture.
  • In addition, it’s a good idea to ask questions about the processing techniques of CBD products, to rule out the possibility of cross-contamination.
  • Avoid second-hand exposure to cannabis use, or contact with your hair by THC users.
  • Also avoid using transdermal patches that contain THC, as these get the compound into the bloodstream.

Combining CBD oils with THC

In research conducted at the Lautenberg Center, it was found that CBD combined with other cannabis plant compounds extracted from a full-spectrum product was more effective at treating inflammation and pain compared to a CBD-only product.

Full-spectrum products, i.e. those containing THC, are most often used for this purpose. As you have read above, our Higea CBD broad spectrum oils are not likely to test positive in a drug test, as it is the cannabinoid THC that is being tested for.

cbd topical alcohol

Conclusion

Finally, think of topical CBD the same way you would alcohol. That is, drinking alcohol is the only way to increase your blood alcohol content. Therefore, you won’t be able to get drunk by rubbing whiskey or beer on your thigh.

The same is true for marijuana, as THC can only enter the bloodstream by oral ingestion, combustion, or through a special transdermal patch. So, assuming you only use topical cannabis and don’t smoke, or use edible CBD, or CBD oils with certified lab testing, you won’t have a problem taking a drug test.

If you like to consume CBD orally, you may want to skip the other categories before taking the test. In theory, getting a false positive on a marijuana test with topical CBD is relatively impossible, if it is pure CBD containing less than 0.2% THC.

However, because CBD products are not yet fully regulated, there is no real guarantee that a product contains high quality, pure CBD oil, or that its concentration is at a safe or effective level.

Consequently, it is best to be sure to exercise caution, and do thorough research when purchasing quality topical CBD. This is the only way to guarantee its purity, especially if you need to take a cannabis test.
