Adenosine, sleep and CBD

In this article we will talk to you about adenosine, sleep and CBD, as they are all related to each other. We’ll also see what adenosine deaminase, and adenosine triphosphate mean.

Nowadays not many people know what adenosine is, and how important it is for the quality of sleep. Therefore, we will now answer these questions and analyse their relationship with CBD.

What is adenosine and what is it used for?

Adenosine is a molecule found in every cell of our body. It rapidly interacts with phosphate to generate adenosine monophosphate and adenosine triphosphate, among other chemical molecules. Adenosine monophosphate is a medication used to treat shingles, or herpes zoster infection, as well as porphyria cutanea tarda, a blood condition.

For its part, adenosine triphosphate is used to increase muscle energy. It is also used to treat acute renal failure, multiple organ failure, pulmonary hypertension, as well as cystic fibrosis. It is even included in the treatment of lung cancer, weight loss and blood pressure control during anesthesia and surgery.

Adenosine triphosphate is often used for heart stress tests. Adenosine is given intravenously to patients to treat surgical and nerve pain, pulmonary hypertension, and certain types of irregular heartbeats.

To treat nerve pain, adenosine is injected into the area around the spinal cord. Some of the conditions treated with adenosine phosphate include:

  • Varicose veins
  • Bursitis
  • Tendon pain and inflammation(tendonitis)
  • Itching
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Neuropathy
  • Shingles (herpes zoster infection)
  • Cold sores and genital herpes (herpes simplex infections)
  • Poor blood circulation

What is adenosine deaminase?

It is an enzyme that is related to the metabolism of purines, and whose main function is to develop and maintain the immune system in humans. Despite this, science still does not fully understand the physiological role of adenosine deaminase.

An adenosine deaminase test is performed to confirm or rule out a possible Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. That is, to diagnose tuberculosis, but it is also done to detect information in other biological fluids. This test is also recommended when adenosine deaminase deficiency is suspected.

Testing is essential when an individual experiences chest pain, coughing, or has difficulty breathing. The sample needed for such analysis is pleural fluid, which is obtained through a method known as “thoracentesis”. Sometimes the sample can be obtained using other biological fluids.

How does adenosine work?

Adenosine as an antiarrhythmic prevents irregular heart rhythm by blocking faulty circuits in the heart. In people with advanced cancer, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) may counteract the disturbances in energy metabolism that lead to weight loss.

Adenosine is known to be effective in treating certain types of irregular heartbeats. This may be through an intravenous medication that is only available by prescription.

It may also be helpful in treating weight loss in people with advanced cancer. In people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer and other cancers, intravenous adenosine triphosphate seems to improve appetite, food intake, and quality of life.

Poor circulation causes wounds, which occur mainly in the legs and are known as venous stasis ulcers. Fluid retention, itching, swelling, and redness caused by this type of ulcer can be relieved with intramuscular adenosine monophosphate.

Although there is not enough evidence, it is possible that herpes zoster infection can be treated with an injection of adenosine monophosphate into the muscle. It might even prevent the nerve pain associated with this infection.

Intramuscular monophosphate might be effective in treating other types of herpes infections, although again, research is limited.

What are its side effects?

When given by injection by qualified healthcare providers, adenosine appears to be safe for most people. When taken in large doses, it can cause breathing problems and chest pain.

Possible side effects are:

  • Headache
  • Heart palpitations
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Blush
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disorders
  • Coughing and anxiety

Adenosine indications

There are some special warnings and precautions to keep in mind when using adenosine as a medicine. For example, in lactation and pregnancy, the use during these stages is still not well understood, so it is recommended to avoid it.

On the other hand, adenosine triphosphate can cause an increase in uric acid levels in the blood and urine. In other words, it can cause gout. Gout causes swollen, tender joints. The joint at the base of the big toe is most commonly affected.

In addition, adenosine triphosphate can cause chest discomfort and restrict blood flow to the heart. It can also exacerbate symptoms of heart disease, such as chest discomfort and heart attack.

Interaction with other medicines

  • Dipyridamole. To get rid of adenosine, the body breaks it down. Dipyrfidamole can prevent the degradation of adenosine. Reduced breakdown of adenosine can lead to heart problems. Therefore, if you are taking Dipyridamole, you should not take adenosine.
  • Gout medications. Gout is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. As mentioned above, adenosine can raise uric acid levels in the body, reducing the effectiveness of gout treatments.
  • Carbamazepine. Adenosine has the ability to slow down the heartbeat. When Carbamazepine is combined with adenosine, your heart may beat too slowly. Therefore, if you are taking Carbamazepine, avoid adenosine.
  • Methylxanthines. These drugs can block the effects of adenosine. Doctors often use adenosine to perform a heart test. At least 24 hours before a cardiac stress test, do not drink black tea or other foods containing caffeine. Aminophylline, caffeine, and theophylline are examples of methylxanthines.

Adenosine, sleep and CBD How are they related?

As stated above, adenosine is a type of molecule that is naturally found in all cells of the body. It is considered one of the chemical messengers or neurotransmitters in the brain and is used to transfer energy within cells by producing molecules such as adenosine triphosphate and adenosine diphosphate.

Adenosine has been found to be an excellent natural pain reliever, especially because it has the ability to open blood vessels and help regulate heart rate, among other things.

The combination of adenine, a nitrogen-based molecule, and ribose, a sugar, makes the production of adenosine in the body possible. Adenosine is defined as a xanthine molecule in addition to being a neurotransmitter. Adenosine is found in the DNA and RNA of every cell in the human body.

How does adenosine impact sleep quality?

Adenosine is a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator that affects complicated sleep behavior, particularly sleep onset. It plays an important role in many metabolic processes.

It functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which means it acts as a central nervous system depressant. Not only that, it can also inhibit many processes associated with wakefulness. Adenosine levels in the brain increase every hour while you are awake, and this is believed to be the cause of increased levels of sleepiness when a person stays awake for longer.

Adenosine levels rise steadily during wakefulness in parts of the brain critical for stimulating arousal, particularly the reticular activating system in the brainstem. Adenosine decreases arousal and promotes tiredness in high amounts. Then, during sleep, adenosine levels drop.

As a result, scientists have long assumed that high levels of adenosine are responsible for sleep. Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, and other beverages, is a chemical xanthine similar to adenosine. Caffeine acts to inhibit sleep by blocking the action of adenosine in the brain, which increases wakefulness. In other words, when you drink caffeine, your body works to stimulate your brain by blocking the processing of adenosine.

adenosine sleep stages

Adenosine and the stages of sleep

The brain of a sleeping person remains active during the various stages of sleep. All these stages of sleep serve different functions of rest and rejuvenation. Stage 1 sleep, for example, slows the pulse rate and breathing, while muscles relax and contract.

Body temperature drops in stage 2 sleep and heart rate and breathing slow down even more. Also, during this same stage, eye movement stops.

During stage 3 you experience the deep sleep necessary to wake up feeling rejuvenated. Your breathing and heart rate are at their lowest levels, and you may find it hard to wake up.

The eyes move rapidly during REM sleep and breathing is rapid and erratic. During this stage, your heart rate and blood pressure are similar to what they are when you are awake. When you are in this stage, you dream, however, the amount of time you spend in REM decreases as you get older.

You may wonder: how is adenosine related to the stages of sleep? Researchers have found that the rate of adenosine metabolism appears to directly influence or determine the quality of deep sleep. It can even influence a person’s vulnerability to sleep deprivation.

CBD and adenosine

Cannabidiol CBD controls multiple non-cannabinoid receptors and ion channels. Despite this, it has little affinity for either of the two cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). It also functions in non-receptor-dependent ways, such as delaying the “reuptake” of endogenous neurotransmitters such as anandamide and adenosine, and stimulating or inhibiting the binding action of some G protein-coupled receptors.

On the other hand, CBD’s anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties are partly due to its inhibition of adenosine reuptake. CBD increases adenosine levels in the brain by delaying the reuptake of this neurotransmitter, which modulates the activation of the adenosine receptor.

Adenosine A1A and A2Areceptors regulate myocardial oxygen consumption and coronary blood flow. Because of this, adenosine receptors are important in cardiovascular function. In addition, these receptors have anti-inflammatory properties throughout the body.

How does CBD influence sleep?

Growing public interest in the benefits of medical marijuana, particularly CBD, has led academics to investigate its effects over the past decade. High doses of CBD, according to preliminary research, may help with sleep.

Research on the therapeutic effects of CBD revealed that a CBD dose of 160 milligrams from a reliable source improved sleep duration compared to a placebo. The researchers also found that placebo, 5 mg of the insomnia drug nitrazepam and 40, 80 and 160 mg of CBD helped subjects fall asleep.

Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, usually peaks in the morning. However, people who suffer from insomnia may have high cortisol levels at night. Having high levels of cortisol during the night can cause you to wake up more often, even if you don’t have insomnia.

The good news is that in a study on the effects of CBD, researchers found that when subjects consumed 300 or 600 mg of CBD oil, their cortisol levels decreased dramatically. These findings show that CBD inhibits the release of cortisol, so it may work as a sedative.
